TRIPARKS Susanne Haines reports on the artists’ residency project that links Dartmoor with Exmoor and Northumberland National Parks.
 | | Volkhardt and farmer Chris Stacey install Dartmoor turf on Armada Way, Central Plymouth | In May, an exhibition of work from Aune Head Art’s Triparks project will be shown in the new exhibition space of the Duchy Square Centre for Creativity, in Princetown – the first of three destinations. A preview exhibition at Dulverton Village Hall one weekend last November gave visitors a chance to glimpse the work for the first time. For the artists, too, this was their first opportunity to see each other’s work under the same roof: ‘We are good neighbours’, said Volkhardt Müller, one of the two Dartmoor artists who had been commissioned for the project.
The seeds for Triparks were sown several years ago, when Nancy Sinclair and Richard Povall of Aune Head Arts, the Dartmoor-based artist-led contemporary arts organisation, began to think about taking people’s knowledge of Dartmoor out of the region, and to see the potential of the cross-fertilisation of ideas between this park and two other, very different parks. A partnership was developed with Somerset Art Works and Exmoor National Park, and with Allenheads Contemporary Arts and Northumberland National Park. Early last year the six artists were commissioned: Volkhardt Müller and Hugh Nankivell for Dartmoor, Karen Guthrie and Harald Smykla for Exmoor, and Paul Grimmer and Bridget Kennedy for Northumberland. |
