Celebrate 25 years of Dartmoor Magazine on this stunning walk across the heart of one of England’s last true wildernesses 4-5 September 2010

Dartmoor is the largest true wild area in the south of England and is generally considered a testing navigational challenge. In celebration of our 100th issue (Autumn 2010) we are inviting you to join us on this guided trek across the Moor from south to north, a route that offers the best of Dartmoor’s rugged landscape and ancient sites.

Dartmoor is true wild country. Cut Hill, near Fur Tor, is the centre of the North Moor and the furthest point from any road south of Northumberland. The South and North Moors are not crowded and even in midsummer you will see few people, if any, in the remoter parts. There are very few paths and trails and the conditions under foot can, at times, be quite hard going. The Moors are mysterious and when the mist is down even the most experienced walker will be tested. But these walks are not route marches; we walk at a pace which enables you to enjoy the Moor.

You will be accompanied by a qualified instructor who will be happy to teach some navigation skills (or help you brush up any which may have dulled over the years). However, you may just wish to delight in being miles from the nearest road or habitation as you trek through this outstandingly beautiful area. Buzzard, raven, badger and fox are just some of the animal species that may be seen.

Programme

At 08.30 am on Saturday we will head to the south side of Dartmoor near Ivybridge. Our route will take us to the centre of the South Moor via an old industrial track. The day will finish at Two Bridges or Powder Mills (see options below). On Sunday we will head for the wild and isolated North Moor, finishing near Meldon.

All you need to carry is your day rucksack, packed lunch, waterproofs, and so on. You should expect to walk for 6 to 7 hours each day, led by either John or Steve: John is a member of the Association of Mountain Instructors and holds the Mountain Instructors Award; Steve is a qualified International Mountain Leader. Both have a passion for Dartmoor and can share many a tale of the Moor’s myths and legends. They also have a keen interest in Dartmoor’s unique environment and will be only too pleased to point out animals and birds spotted during the walk.

Accommodation can be arranged for the duration of the trek.
